If you are out to describe the truth, leave elegance to the tailor.

things I've never done.

it feels like lately is filled with challenges to do things I've never done.

on thursday, my paintings will be exhibited.
the little sculptures I made
[intentionally mysterious photos above]
will be on display as the centerpieces for the event.
i won't be able to go get a platter of food to serve
to avoid talking about my art.

in grad class, i'm working through some things I never thought about before.
we're basically being challenged to react to life in fundamentally different ways.
in ways that speak boldly
Christ is what I'm living for, with reckless abandon.

I want to be able to live in a way that says that about me.
when suffering comes, as it always does,
I want to choose to suffer with purpose.
when opportunities come, like they have this week,
to stand by something that is an expression of God's power in my life,
I want to be bold about that.
Bold about Him.

More this week than ever, I am so grateful for men and women
who have modeled that for me.
People who have poured out their gifts and talents
at the foot of the cross,
serving others and furthering Christ's kingdom.
I have been blessed by seeing some extraordinary followers of Jesus.

some little letters

dear giraffe cup,
you definitely hold more coffee than any other mug.
that's the best.
also- you are cute.

dear gregory,
I found some emails you sent me from India before we started dating.
so, so dear to me.
you've always been so kind and intentional with me.
i love you.

dear plant on the windowsill,
please keep producing those little buds.
they make me cheerful.

not so dear allergies,
stop.
just stop.

dear friends in foreign countries,
guess who just got a new skype name?!?!
[me!]

dear cookbooks,
I can't wait til I have a real life kitchen.
you will be used and abused.
...in the best way?

happy sunday.

coffee time.

cafe du monde cup, a gift from people I love
a million books and notebooks
my bible.

Lately I've just been collecting quotes from all over the place.
Class, reading, good conversations.
It's my best friend rubbing off on me.
[she's like... a professional quote compiler. it's impressive.]

If you're interested, read on.

about research:

"desire is more important than opportunity or ability.
it's not the most talented people who get to do this.
It's the ones that really want it."
-Dr. Gary Schnittjer

"As a Christian, research should be one of the most humbling things you can do.
We believe we find truth, we don't create it.
The right attitude is one of submission."
-Dr. Toews

"As a Christian in research, it's important not to undertip
and leave a gospel tract.
Do things with excellence, treat people well,
and your worldview will matter in the best way. "
-Dr. Williams

On Life and Suffering:

"Only the suffering God can help."
-Bonhoeffer

"The presence of God is a game changer"
-Dr. Toews

"And this do, knowing the time, that it is already
the hour for you to awaken from your sleep;
for salvation is nearer to us than when we first believed."
Romans 13:11

"all coping mechanisms work, they just have side effects."
-Jeff Black

Just a few things that have been running through my head.
Happy Friday!
Have a lovely weekend!

last week, today.

last week-

i had a weird thing where i woke up in the middle of the night
and felt like I had swallowed a marble.
since i sleepwalk, sleeptalk, otherwise do weird stuff in my sleep, etc.
I thought I might have actually swallowed something.
[like a puppy/two year old]

but not so.

so the marble stayed for a few days.

weird.

Other than that, Spring break was awesome.
beautiful weather, good book.
[the lacuna by barbara kingsolver]
and, most importantly, lots of time with the monkey-man.

today-

coffee in bed

lots of homework
[too busy on spring break relaxing to do it]

an ambush of a particular teacher who never answers emails
[ambush = go to her office and plead with her to help me]

thank you notes to my wonderful friends
who threw me a pantry party before spring break.

the best.

I love Spring Break.

so far, I have:
-driven up to West Point, NY with Greg
-gotten more coffee than I probably should be drinking
-taken a long, late afternoon walk in the sunshine
-met some amazing new people at church
-had delicious homemade bean burritos with cilantro
-prayed with my pseudo-family (and Greg) about the week
- baked some yummy looking dark chocolate chip cookies with cherries
-taken a nice long run
-read books...that I wanted to read!
-sat outside on the porch
-and gotten no homework done.

so...homework.
starts now.

a few favorites...

* a beautiful sunset over our apartment building
*art on the walls, a reminder of a collection i loved as a bookmark in my bible
*coffee mug- purchased by my love, Alyssa, when she was still my roomie.
[drinking my coffee in her honor this morning!]
* sunshine streaming in on this beautiful day- 62 degrees here!

I love days like this.

Walks out in the sunshine with friends,
happy weather,
and beautiful things literally surround me.

I waited patiently for the Lord;
and he inclined to me, and heard my cry.
He brought me up out of the pit of destruction,
out of the miry clay;
and he set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm.
And he put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God;
Many will see and fear, and will trust in our God.
Pslam 40:1-3

I truly hope that it's this beautiful wherever you are!

this is the face

that I get from Greg
when he's "in the zone"
and I interrupt him to tell him about something,
usually life changing,
about how my coffee tastes or something.

Regardless of that face,
Greg and I had a lovely little date on Sunday after church.
We did homework (me) and drew some buildings (Greg)
at one very tiny Starbucks table.
[where we had to share a plug for our two computers...it was a feat.]

Driving back home afterwards,
I totally messed up the directions.
[I usually drive it in about an hour and a half, and it took me three to get home.]
I missed an appointment with a friend,
Abby- whose car I borrowed- had to wait up for me,
and Greg had to talk me through driving back to Philly from...
Delaware.
[yes...I had gone that far.]

I just want to say thank you and publicly demonstrate my gratefulness
for people who love me enough to deal with my inability to understand directions,
no matter how simple they seem.
People like these demonstrate the grace of God to me all the time.

Feeling so lucky.

last night- a new experience

my friend Micheal came over and filmed a little video
for his "video of the week"
where he asked me about my artist's perspective on life.

he's super talented, and has lots of equipment
[see above]
and he chose really cool music and stuff...

someone should have told me not to make so many weird faces.

See the video here!

happy Sunday!

so happy!

some of my paintings were chosen to be shown at an exhibit at school!
I actually can't believe it.
So I had one of my pieces framed, and I went and picked it up today.
Never been so thrilled about a brown paper package in my life!

today:
stamping some save the dates
laundry
classes
and singing with my wonderful friends!

hope your day is just as fantastic!

for with thee is the fountain of life;
in thy light we see light.
Psalm 36:9
