scenes from a walk

Ok, so this first one was not from my walk...but I just think flying is amazing.

"I love the way a pony tail feels!"

Who knew this lovely little field was right near our apartment?!

So, so weird.

This pretty much captures my walking style.

My church!

My hair clip doesn't know which way we should walk next.
I've always been bad with directions.

Random Bamboo forest, so cool.

You should all check out my beautiful friend Chaucee's street style blog.
It's awesome.
She's in Israel.
It's here.

I have to say, boarding the plane to come back here to this weather was painful.

It was 85 degrees in Florida while we were there, oh my word.

The conference was amazing- it's so powerful to see a network of young adults with a common purpose immediately hit it off.
I'm still processing through a lot of what was discussed, so I'm sure there will be sporadic quotes and reflections here on the blog for a while, but I wanted to throw some pictures up!

our group- plus our director of student programs and dean of student life

sarah and i obviously thrilled to be venturing into warmer territory

Lauren, a student from CIU in South Carolina, myself, and Taj walking over to see the historic shuttle launch

us enjoying the sunshine for our last morning of the conference

There was an unbelievable amount of challenging and encouraging data thrown our way ,
a totally sketchy necessary trip to a place called The Drunken Monkey with our Dean of Students,
absolutely crazy games of Dutch Blitz played [very loudly],
and a lot of valuable friendships forged
in just those three days.

Happy Sunday!

check this out

It snowed last night.
And if you know me well at all you know I really can't stand snow.
(It just makes you so unbearably cold chilly!)
So I'm spending some time gazing at these lovely images- mostly to distract myself.

Love these colors, the details.

 Beautiful interiors.

 Gorgeous painting.

My favorite museum at home is doing an exhibit on tea, including these two tea pots!
They've also set up tea times- sounds like a fabulous date idea to me!

I'm off to sunny (God willing) Florida tomorrow afternoon, so I'll do my best to take good pictures!

I am...

loving the Cinnamon raisin bread Alyssa brought back from church yesterday.

kind of excited about these pictures I took after church yesterday...
all by myself. I thought they'd be way more awkward than they actually are! (They're only moderately awkward- yay!)

getting ready for a trip to Florida!!!
A bunch of us are going down to a conference from Wednesday- Saturday.
I have no idea what to expect, and it's the first year the university is doing it, so no one really does.
Which makes it very exciting. Especially since we're going to be discussing Bible things.

loving the Aeneid. Such a break from Greek stoicism.

"The manhood of the man, his pride of birth,
came home to her time and again;
his looks, his words
remained with her to haunt her mind,
and desire for him gave her no rest. "

{Virgil describing Dido's love for Aeneas}

beautiful, right?

M! Aren't I so clever? Ha.

That kind of week.

It was just a heels kind of week.
I wore them four days this week- way more than usual.

It just felt right.

Picture Credit- the lovely and talented Alyssa

I just love this weekend-
We cleaned the apartment, and it looks like new.
My valentine's roses are living longer than expected.
I feel involved at church, and service today was super challenging.
I'm going to go craft a few letters for friends.

Nice beginning to a weekend, I think.

1. I love walks.
Because of the glorious weather yesterday, Alyssa and I took a long one around our neighborhood.

My dear friend Monica and I, taking a walk in Guatemala 2 years ago.

2. I had the best scones I've ever had this morning for breakfast. (Thank you Alyssa and Saritha!)

3. Those most delicious scones were eaten while watching Inherit the Wind. A personal favorite book and movie of mine.

The movie raises so many important issues for people of faith.
Watching it with my friends, we talked about how necessary it is for us to wrestle with the issues of human reason as it relates to scripture.

How do we love the Lord with our heart, soul, and mind?

4. Grocery shopping+ thrift shopping+ Alyssa= awesome.

5. How beautiful are these pictures by photographer David Zimmerman
I love the idea of a project dealing with barriers.

6. Phone date last night with this guy.

Hope everyone's weekend is just as wonderful!

Just Because

In one of my classes this week, a professor casually said something that demonstrates an attitude very rarely displayed.
It totally changed the direction of our class discussion and made me think more deeply about the motives tacit behind my actions.
It so effected our class that a girl sitting next to me promptly changed her facebook status to the quote.

Just because you feel something, doesn't mean you need to act on it.

On the surface, this seems  so basic.
It's something that instructs us to tell children that even if they want their friend's toy, they shouldn't take it.
That even if you wonder what it would be like to jump into a giant snow bank, and really want to,  you shouldn't. {You'll end up very wet in class.

But for us, in our culture, we give a lot of credence to our emotions.
When we are hurt, we act on that.
We gossip, we slander, we make those comments others judge "funny," even when we know they'll cause pain.
When we feel love, we act on that.

But what happens when that "lovin feeling" disappears?
What happens when things or people leave us with a certain taste of apathy lingering?
What then do we act on?

I personally want to act on the basis of Christ's love for me. I always have a reason to love others, based on that gift. When I have feelings of jealousy, anger, bitterness, or fear, I want to decide not to act on those.
So many of my choices are made on autopilot.
I want to really choose.

Anyways, here are some things I really like:

The title/heading confessions pretty much just allows me to make a random list- which is why i like it.

1. I ate free Chipotle for dinner last night and tonight. (Hello, leftovers!)

2. I tried that nail polish thing where you marble the colors together before you dip your nails in it- so much harder than it looks in the youtube videos. (Like several hours harder.)

3. Every time my roommate talks about the formal in the spring I get little butterflies in my tummy. I cannot wait. An excuse to get dressed up! And last years was so fun!

Me and My Hot Date last year. (Taken by Chaucee)

4. I have been having wacko dizzy spells and seriously do not know how to make them stop. Anyone? Anyone?

5. I slept through my first class of the semester yesterday, and it's soooo bad. Once you skip one, you feel like you're invincible or something. And like you could get away with skipping every class. Especially those pesky ones you have to wake up at 6 am for.

6. I'm loving blogging more than I thought I would.

7. The whole followers thing- I have no idea how that works. It feels strange to ask someone to follow you, but then again, it also feels strange to want followers.

A Family Affair

This past weekend, our friends Matt and Megan got married in our home church, and it reminded me of a lot of things.

{{First kiss as man and wife.}}

It was good to see friends tie the knot.
It was good to be reminded that marriage is HUGE
[like... a way bigger deal than I usually think]
It was awesome to see the space Greg designed and built used for such a big event.

But the best part was how much the wedding felt like family.

So many of the people in attendance gave gifts of service for the couple.

Greg took pictures, Rob made delicious food, Isis & Co. did a great job with the planning and decor.

Erin made this beautiful, beautiful cake.

Crazy! I saw her make those roses!!

It was really beautiful to not just rejoice in Matt and Megan joining each other's families and starting their own, but also to celebrate the church family.

We have flaws, strange people, shy people, loud people, a large measure of dysfunction, and, as was evident this past Sunday, a great love for one another and for the Lord.

The wedding was funny and fun, serious and celebratory.

Such a nice reason to come home.

Jess and I at the Ceremony. Beautiful girl! [and college bound!]

Super handsome photographer and I at the reception. What a cutie.

Well, I hope that your day after Valentine's isn't a let down and that you're still enjoying flowers, chocolate, and L.O.V.E.

A Little Update

So remember when I told ya'll about the party?
This is Alyssa (L) and Me (R) at the Midwinter's Evening Party. Unfortunately, neither of us won best dressed, but I did get to wear red lipstick for the first time in a while!

So fun.

In other news, I went home this weekend.

It was a nice little get away, and the Monkey Man did pretty well with an early Valentine's celebration.

We saw this movie:

which was awesome. Funny and artsy. A rare feat!

I loved the scene where King George VI walks away from Lionel Logue in the park- such pretty cinema.

Another plus- the movie reminded me again how much I love the idea of royalty.
{{Who doesn't want to be a princess??}}

The main reason for the weekend away was to see some friends get married at our home church.
I can't wait to share pictures with ya'll!

A large white orangutan I gave to Monkey Man (fitting, no?) last Valentine's day.

I hope all of you had a beautiful Valentine's day, and that you know the one who loves you most!

Events, Events, Events!

Last semester, we had some excellent times.

We welcomed new students with Augustivus, an invention of our school in which we play ridiculous games and cheer each other on. I wore my most personality describing shoes.

The Resident Life Team at our Apartments threw an awesome garden party, where we played classy lawn games, ate chocolate covered strawberries, and enjoyed all the candles!

Shane and Shane came to campus! How lucky are we?!?

Our Resident Life Team had an awkward middle school dance party... Just guess which clique I fit into.

We successfully surprised lovely Anna with a bridal shower. (The reason she is the ex-roommate.)

Enjoyed Christmas festivities with Alyssa (current roommate and photographer extraordinaire!)

And I'm thinking about all of these because the first big event of the semester is today, or rather, tonight. Alyssa and I will be dressing according to the invitation in Black, White, and Red, and I can't wait!

Don't you just love a good reason to get dressed up?
